This review is for is to inform consumers about a rather severe problem that this unit has an issue with
    and how to fix it.

PRE: This unit when it was shipped by Onkyo was part of a line of units that were to feature
new and improved networking components for networked home theater management. However, the firmware
installed on the units was as Onkyo puts it- not the correct version.
In short the unit can be a brick out of the box and nothing works until you follow there new update procedure
as described online if the unit contains the original firmware from the factory.
I received one of these units.

To fix this you will have to re flash the firmware on the unit manually, as per Onkyo all “networked”
(internet based) rom flashing is no longer done for this unit.

So if you care not to return it and you want to fix it:

    1. get a usb 2.0 flash key of about 4G or smaller and in windows format it to regular FAT32.
more “advanced” keys capable of teleportation are not recognized

    2. Go to Onkyo’s website and download the rom zip for the unit,

    3. extract the entire zip to the key there will be several files
    the format looks like
    x7x8x8x8x.bla
    x7x8x8x8x.bla
    x7x8x8x8x.bla
    <folder>

    4. Take that and plug it into the unit, turn the unit by pushing the power button on the unit, THEN with your remote guide the unit to usb update, and update
    5. go make a sandwich and wait for the unit to finish-
    6. once that’s done, exit menu, turn off unit, unplug it (cause a full power cycle is recommended), tap dance for 1 minute, then plug it back in and using your remote turn on the unit, it will boot and reset it self, From there follow the audio setup as described in the instructions and your done.

I will say once it works the sound quality is solid- but this firmware quality issue is really pathetic, your gonna have a bad time getting the unit to run.

    Good stuff:
Nice receiver. Pretty easy to set up. Good to get 5.1 surround sound from hi-def movies. Nice selection of network audio (Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify, and others I haven’t heard of).
    Bad stuff:
Although there are six HDMI inputs, two component inputs and four old-style video inputs on the back panel, the remote only allows selection from amongst five logical inputs: “BD/DVD”, “CBL/SAT”, “GAME”, “PC” and “AUX”. In setup mode you can assign a physical input to one of these logical inputs (e.g. I have a Roku plugged into HDMI5 that I assigned to “AUX”). But this means that if you actually plug in six HDMI devices (in fact more than five of any combination of device types), you will have to juggle in setup mode to reassign a couple of them before you can select them. Seems almost pointless having six sockets if it is such a pain to use all of them.
The receiver does not “up-convert” video inputs. So if have any component or regular video devices connected to the receiver, you will have to run that same type of cable from the receiver to the TV and switch inputs on the TV when switching inputs on the receiver .
Could not get logged into my “spotify” account.
Ugly user interface for network audio channels (much better to leave the TV screen off and operate using the iPhone “Onkyo Remote2″ app that shows album cover art.

I have this receiver set up to control my pool sound system. I am very pleased with it. The biggest selling point for me was the smart phone remote app. Now I can sit anywhere on my patio and control volume, audio selection, even bass and treble. It’s pretty sweet. Internet radio works great. There’s a lot of free selections and they are very easy to use. I even like Pandora better with the app, since I don’t get all of the pop up advertisements on it like you do with stand alone Pandora. I have this paired up with three Tic GS-3′s and the sound is excellent.
The wireless dongle does work well with it for wireless internet, but it doesn’t keep a local connection when the receiver is powered off, therefore, you cannot turn the receiver on with your app. So, skip the dongle, and buy a network bridge/booster if you cannot plug this directly into your router. With the bridge, I am able to boost my wireless signal, maintain a much better signal, and turn the receiver on.
All in all, very happy with this purchase.
