First of all, the receiver arrived ahead of schedule (thanks, Amazon). It was well packaged, and ready for installation. If you’re more comfortable with a full manual, you’ll have to print it off the included CD or have your laptop near by to reference it. It isn’t really required. All the connectors are clearly marked and, if you have an HDML cable out to your TV or monitor, has an easy to use text based on-screen menu for setup. I connected HDMI cables from our PS3 and our cable TV box as well as speakers for our 5.1 surround setup. Finally I connected the HDMI out to our Sony 46″ LED TV. It was a typical Onkyo install, easy and quick.

Once installed and powered up, it sounded superb. I was very impressed with the newfound clarity in my BD movies and sound tracks. The rear surrounds, It’s always an audio awakening to hear things you hadn’t heard before. To me, that is a great indicator of audio quality and performance and I have yet to be disappointed with Onkyo receivers. A couple of nits, there are no bannana plug connectors for the speakers, so be prepared to have some fun with preparing speaker wires for connecting to the unit. Also, this receiver provides 65 watts per channel of power, which is ample for me, but may be insufficient for larger media rooms. Overall, a great price for a high-quality 5.1 HT receiver.

This is my second onkyo receiver and was expecting the same quality as the first. The receiver is paired with a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Integrated Wi-Fi 3D Blu-ray DVD Player over hdmi. This combination seems to be a problem. The receiver has problems decoding the bitstream data coming from the blu-ray player which results in sound dropping out and once in a while, the video. Research on this issue, and confirmed for my set up, was to change the data coming from the player to PCM (i.e., the player decodes the data rather than having the receiver do it). This is done in the settings menu of the blue ray player and is quite easy to do. There is no loss in either sound or video quality so that is good. But this issue was quite frustrating until I could figure out what was going on. Interestingly, the sound dropping did not happen with my other Panasonic blu ray player (Panasonic DMP-BD65 Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black)). So, not quite ready out of the box but this may not be an issue for other receiver-blu ray player combinations.

I ordered this receiver to replace one which had no 1080P capability and no HDMI inputs. The Onkyo TX-SR313 A/V receiver has 4 HDMI inputs. I had some issues hooking up which weren’t really the Onkyo’s fault. I use an aging small media PC to store MP3′s of all our music collection along with WIndows Media Center to manage and play the music.

We also use a small wireless transmitter for putting sound into whatever room we want just by lugging in a wireless speaker. The only inputs which will transmit via the “Tape Out” recoding conneciton are the analog inputs. All the 4 main HDMI inputs have corresponding analog for the sound.

The issue was that the aging PC did not have sound capability from its HDMI output, but the Onkyo thought it should use the HDMI for the sound in. The odd thing is that all other inputs are HDMI with a paired analog, and none of those had this issue using the analog and displaying the HDMI video. My music from thje PC would not play with the HDMI hooked in from the PC. I very nearly returned this unit as a result of the frustration of trying to get this to work properly.

The fix is in the setup, but it is not intuitive to find either in the setup menus or in the manual (which I had to print out myself). You can force it to use the analog inputs as the first choice. That it was so hard to find that setting, and that the manual is on disk and not all that clear is why I gave this 3 stars instead of 4.

I like the system – the physical hook up was easy – everything is clearly marked on the back panel. The system sounds great and for about $200 is a nice price. I am happy now with the product. If you are not trying to do weird things with this box’s inputs and outputs, it should work just fine for you,
